A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

TIMBER FURNITURE: A SUSTAINABLE SOLUTION

Gone are the days of cheap throwaway items as sustainability makes a stance across Australia. Environmentally friendly production is a growing trend across many industries, and this is certainly the case for timber furniture manufacturing. Time and time again we are receiving enquiries from customers looking for custom made timber furniture on the Sunshine Coast and in Brisbane that is sustainable, non-toxic and built to stand the test of time.

While cheap furniture offers a temporary solution, it costs a lot more in the long run for both your wallet and our planet. Investing in timber furniture that can be continually reused, disassembled, repaired and refinished is a worthwhile investment that will only continue to give back for years to come. The classic, timeless appeal of timber furniture means your special piece will never get tired or outdated. The unique grain and natural timber colours allow you to have a one-off creation that will always remain exclusive to you.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN PURCHASING CUSTOM MADE TIMBER FURNITURE

When purchasing timber home and office furniture, always look for a furniture maker who sources quality solid hardwood. Australian timbers such as Blackbutt, Tasmanian Oak and Victorian Ash are hard-wearing and look great with an abundance of character, making the perfect statement piece in any room.

Unlike veneer and plywood, solid timber furniture can be refinished time and time again. Scratches, dents and discoloration can be sanded back and refinished, making your special piece appear brand new. This is particularly important for furniture located in high traffic areas in your home. Timber benchtops and timber dining tables are both heavily used items that can be scratched and dented throughout meal times with family and friends.

HOW SUNSHINE COAST MADE FURNITURE HELPS CREATE A NON-TOXIC ENVIRONMENT FOR YOUR HOME

When you buy locally made timber furniture there is no need to import which means your custom piece can be made with chemical free non-toxic Australian wood. If this isn’t a good enough reason to keep it local we don’t know what is!

Nasty chemicals in stains and finishes should always be a consideration when purchasing timber furniture, especially timber bedroom furniture such as beds, bedside tables and dressers. The bedroom is one of the most used rooms in the house and should be a sacred sleep sanctuary which is safe from toxins to allow you to rest and rejuvenate.

Timber dining tables, as well as timber desks and home office furniture are also important considerations when it comes to chemicals, with countless hours of use throughout the week spent close to these items. Breathing in toxic chemicals, some of which are used in cheaply made or imported furniture, can trigger allergies and cause respiratory and reproductive issues, as well as neurological effects.

WHY YOU SHOULD SHOP LOCAL WHEN IT COMES TO TIMBER FURNITURE

One of the easiest steps towards sustainability is to source locally manufactured furniture. Shopping locally helps reduce transportation waste, as well as plastic and packaging which is required for shipping. Local timber makers are also more likely to reuse materials and minimise waste to reduce production costs.

Buying local also supports small Australian business and this in turn helps to boost our economy and make our nation thrive. It creates demand for local jobs and helps upskill and introduce our younger generations to the workforce – a workforce where they will get treated and paid fairly.

HOW TIMBER & TIDE MAKES A DIFFERENCE TO OUR PLANET & RAINFORESTS

Here at Timber and Tide, we pride ourselves on creating custom made timber furniture for the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane regions, that is handcrafted with care so each piece can be enjoyed for a lifetime and passed down for generations to come. We are passionate about providing a safe home and office environment for our customers, and protecting our beautiful land, the natural world and a future beyond our own.

We are selective about the materials and suppliers we use, especially when it comes to finishes. While many furniture companies use stains and finishes that contain harmful chemicals and toxins, we choose to partner with Whittle Waxes – a local Sunshine Coast business who provides natural hardwax oil and stain alternatives. Their products are made from natural ingredients such as beeswax, carnauba wax and jojoba oil, which makes it perfect for indoor timber furniture.

Every Timber & Tide piece is custom made with no mass production methods used, and either locally delivered or collected from our shed in Noosa. We donate to Australian rainforest restoration organisations and plant more trees than we use, and we continually work towards producing zero waste by creating homewares and gifts out of our cut-offs and scraps, utilising every bit of a tree from the stump to the branch tips.

We can all do our bit now to care for the future of our planet and our rainforests. We thank every one of our customers for supporting us, for shopping local and choosing to make a difference!
